Don’t Forget the Windows
Spring cleaning has finally arrived, and it’s time to get to work. Floors are getting scrubbed, counters are getting cleared, closets are getting purged. But there’s one area that quietly collects dust all winter long and almost always gets skipped:
Your window treatments.
If you’re freshening up your home this season, don’t forget the windows. Because a clean home doesn’t stop at the glass.
Blinds, shades, shutters, and drapery take on more than you think. Between closed-up homes, forced heat, and everyday life, they collect dust, allergens, and even odors. And when the spring sun starts shining again, all of that buildup becomes a lot more noticeable.
Start with a Simple Dusting
For most window coverings, a light-but-thorough dusting goes a long way. A microfiber cloth, duster, or even a vacuum with a brush attachment will remove the surface buildup that’s been sitting there all winter.
Blinds and shutters: Tilt and clean both sides of each slat
Roller and solar shades: Gently wipe down or vacuum
Cellular shades: The hose attachment of a vacuum does the trick
This alone can make a room feel noticeably cleaner.
Tackle Fabric Treatments with Care
Fabric shades and drapery add softness and style, but they also hold onto dust just like everything else in the room. Over time, that dust can settle into the fibers and cause permanent discoloration, especially on lighter fabrics.
Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment for regular maintenance
Spot clean with a mild solution if needed (be sure to follow the care instructions for your specific fabric)
For deeper cleaning, professional care is often the best route
If you’ve ever noticed your drapes looking a little dull in daylight, this is why.
Don’t Forget the Details
The small pieces matter too.
Wipe down hardware like rods and brackets
Clean window sills, screens, and frames while you’re at it
Spring is the perfect time to reset everything, not just what’s most visible.
Let the Light Back In
Once everything is clean, you’ll notice the difference immediately.
And if you’re cleaning your window treatments but still not loving what you see, it might be time for an update. Whether it’s improving light control, adding privacy, or simply refreshing the look, there are plenty of options that can make your space feel brand new.
