Noticing the Little Things Before Thanksgiving
I am hosting Thanksgiving for the first time in years, and nothing will make you see your house more clearly than the thought of people, even your family, walking through it. What starts as cooking and cleaning somehow turns into me scrubbing baseboards, checking the inside of my bedroom closet for no real reason, and discovering an entire stash of crayons my daughter has been tucking under the couch like a tiny, chaotic squirrel. The playroom suddenly looks like it might need a controlled burn instead of a tidy. Hosting season is a spotlight that finds every single corner you forgot existed.
And then I see the window treatments. Those mini blinds in the living room that have been there since before we bought the house nine years ago. The ones I mentally walk past daily because we have been slowly refinishing this 100-plus-year-old home room-by-room. Sometimes I genuinely forget that I am a window treatment professional and that maybe, just maybe, my own house should reflect that.
Here's the thing... window treatments can transform a home faster and more dramatically than almost anything else. They add polish and warmth and make a space feel thoughtfully finished. A perfect example is our downstairs bathroom. We took that space down to the studs and rebuilt every inch from the ground up, but the moment it finally looked complete was when the roman shade went in. After all that major renovation, it was the simple, beautiful shade that pulled the entire room together and made it feel brand new.
Cellular shades seal out the drafts that older homes love to create. Draperies and romans soften every room and make holiday decor feel intentional. Even swapping outdated blinds for clean, modern rollers can make a room feel fresh, which is exactly what we just did in our living room. The Norman USA Breeze roller shades we chose are gorgeous and instantly refreshed the whole space, even hung next to the painted wood paneling. That room is next on the list.
It’s too late to overhaul anything before next Thursday, but it is not too late to start thinking about how you want your home to feel through the winter. If preparing for guests made you notice the same things I did, Monadnock Shutter and Shade is ready to help. Stop by our Keene showroom or schedule a free in-home consultation. A few thoughtful updates can make your home feel new again, even if the playroom and the crayon stash tell another story.
